April through August are the winter months of the Southern Hemisphere. Peru is a country that cannot be judged by Lima even in the winter. It wouldn't be fair. Just like most large cities around the world; adjectives range from smoggy & over populated. Honestly, Lima isn't a city I'd seek out on purpose again. Although, if you have dreams of Machu Picchu or any of the several other locations in Peru, Lima is often the port of call. July 28th is the Peruvian Independence Day, Peruvians seem to celebrate for several days. Of course this is great for them, but i can't help to be selfish and wish they were boring like Americans. The flights from Lima to Cusco is average $70 round trip, at this time it was up wards at $300. At this time I felt it best to hope for another chance to visit one of my top 5's. Also, I admit my "travel" partner was someone that I didn't want to share this experience. Perhaps it is selfish, I'd rather never see Machu Picchu than to experience it in less than ideal circumstances. Sue me!
As I age, I'm interested in traveling alone. It is getting harder to find travel partners. But on the other side of the coin, I welcome the peace. At 27, am I becoming set in my ways? Maybe.
Last trip: July 2009
